Second Step: A Higher Level of Community Care

CIS was approached by The Department of Disabilities Administration (DDA) in 2022 to develop a specialized program to provide better care solutions to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The DDA was looking for better alternatives for clients who were not thriving in state hospitals and Residential Habilitation Centers (RHCs). These placements often turned out to be insufficient programs for individuals who exhibit challenging behaviors, including self-harm, physical aggression, property destruction, and communication barriers.

In response, CIS created the Second Step program to attract and retain a higher caliber of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs.) Candidates with additional certifications such as NAR, CNA, and relevant experience are attracted by higher wages. DSPs working in Second Step homes receive enhanced training at the start and ongoing support thereafter. Moreover, the program is managed by a highly skilled behavior specialist.

Second Step placements involve lengthy transitions, often spanning several months, to address potential barriers to success and prevent future failures. Additional planning and evaluations allow Second Step to compile comprehensive positive behavior support plans and more frequent team meetings to ensure successful experiences.
